I love your writing on travel.

also - really feel this ‘I am such a sap. I always want places to feel the way you think they will.’ though in my case I think it manifests in being better at reading about travel and other places rather than actually travelling to them...

this is so beautifully written and reminds me why i always feel a bit of hesitancy towards visiting the places i've mythologized in my head

thank you! i love being dropped into situations as an outside observer, esp when the place or event has been highly mythologized. i’m like wow… this is personal essay fodder lol

you dropping this essay today has gotta be fate, i'm telling you. i just logged into substack for the first time in a month or so, read a bunch of essays, refreshed my homepage and this was there. i've also been thinking about how weird living in L.A's social climate must be for the past week— which is especially weird 'cause this is a hyperspecific topic i've never thought about before. fate, i'm saying, fate!!!!!!!

your travel diaries are always a treat! i still remember your japan entry painting such a vivid picture that i look back on it and feel like i was actually there & not conjuring an eidetic visual. this was no different!!! i love how you mix descriptions with the place u go with all these charming little details— like the song u hummed or snippets of conversations you had— because it really just makes me feel like i was THERE!!!!! you take me on a walk in your shoes while giving me a bunch of new places to google. i love it!!!!!

(i also learned about the hollywood forever movie screenings through here, which is soooo interesting to me. imagine being some dead famous person and some movie you dislike is being screened 5 feet away from your burial grounds. i'd be so mad. but then again, imagine being some dead famous person and all these people make your burial grounds a place of joy!!!!!! can't decide if i think that's beautiful or not.)
